Assembly overview

  1. Print 3 sheets. Choose A4 or US Letter to match your paper. Print one color OR coloring set at 100% / actual size, one-sided. Turn off fit-to-page. Check the 50 mm line with a ruler. Color before cutting.
  2. Cut the body pieces. Cut G1–G8 and the octagonal caps T and B. Keep all five side tabs on each gore. Lightly pre-fold the four dashed cross-lines and each tab root. Save R1–R24 on sheet 3 for the fringe steps.
  3. Join the eight gores. Glue the five right-side tabs of G1 behind the matching LEFT edge of G2. Match every corner and cross-fold. Continue G2 to G3, then through G8, to make one connected band of eight gores. Keep all printed faces outside.
  4. Close the curved shell. Bring G8’s right-side tabs behind G1’s free left edge. Close the final seam segment by segment, aligning the fold levels. Use a blunt stick through an end opening to support the joints while pressing. Keep both small end openings clear and let all glue dry.
  5. Seal, fill and close. Match B to the lower octagonal opening and tape each outer edge with short clear-tape strips. Lightly fill through the upper opening with loose tissue; do not pack tightly. Match T to the upper opening and tape all eight edges. The body is now closed.
  6. Cut 24 fringe patches. Cut out R1–R24. On each rectangle, cut the short parallel lines upward from the bottom, stopping exactly at the pale line. Keep the top 5 mm band uncut. The strips are 2 mm wide and 15 mm long. The pale line is a stop mark, not a fold.
  7. Attach three rows per gore. Each gore gets three patches: 20 mm wide at the top, 26 mm in the middle, 20 mm below. Glue only the back of each uncut 5 mm band. Center the bands just BELOW the top three cross-folds. Work bottom row first, then middle, then top; leave the fringe tips free.
  8. Fluff the paper fringe. After the glue dries, gently lift and curl the free strips outward with your fingertips or a blunt stick. Repeat around all eight gores. Press the ball lightly at clear areas between strips. This is paper fringe; hard squeezing flattens it and may crease the shell.
